CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

Dick Schumacher

The St. John’s Wood Society seeks to preserve and promote the qualities of St. John’s Wood that drew us to live in this great neighbourhood in the first place.

Primarily that relates to planning and the built environment, but it’s also about advocating for residents on matters of local importance and promoting a sense of community.

We are Westminster Council’s designated amenity society for St. John’s Wood, but that rather dry, bureaucratic title doesn’t convey the extent of what we do.

In an average year, the Society’s planning committee comments on more than 300 different applications from back garden extensions to major proposals at locations such as Lord’s cricket ground or the former St. John’s Wood Wood Barracks, to make sure development considers local concerns.

We also seek to promote the St. John’s Wood economy, sponsoring a discount scheme for members with local retailers.

And we organise events for members, including a family Easter egg hunt, painting classes, wine tasting evenings and occasional drinks parties.

To keep the community informed, we have an active social media presence. We also have a printed semi-annual bulletin to let members know what’s happening in NW8.

Our goal is to do good for the Wood.
